An insertion tool for inserting a catheter into a patient's body is disclosed. In one embodiment, the insertion tool comprises a housing in which at least a portion of the catheter is initially disposed； A hollow needle extending distally from the housing, the hollow needle being pre-positioned on the needle； And a guide wire pre-disposed within the needle. A guide wire advance assembly with a first finger pad is included to selectively advance the guide wire in a distal direction beyond the distal end of the needle in preparation for distal advancement of the catheter. A catheter advancement assembly having a second finger pad to selectively advance the catheter into the patient is also included.
