A method for extraction and isolation of an alkaloid-containing extract from one or more part(s) of the Vachellia xanthophloea tree comprising preparing a first extraction medium comprising one or more part(s) of the Vachellia xanthophloea tree and one or more solvents and removing the extracted vachellia xanthophloea tree part(s) from the first extraction medium after a predetermined period of time to provide a first extracted liquid medium comprising an alkaloid-containing extract. The one or more parts of the Vachellia xanthophloea tree preferably includes the bark, and the preferred solvent is water. The extraction medium is preferably maintained between at least 4°C and no more than 120°C. The extraction is preferably performed under agitation, particularly sonication. The extraction is preferably performed for at least 5 minutes. The extracted Vachellia xanthophloea part(s) are preferably subjected to further extraction using one or more solvents. The method may further comprise concentrating the obtained extract using one or more techniques selected from evaporation, solid phase extraction and freeze drying. A claim to the extract is also included, particularly wherein the extract is obtained from the bark of vachellia xanthophloea such extract comprising quinine. Claim directed to a beverage comprising the extract.
