Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Verfahren zur Abwehr von Hagel oder zur Auslösung der Abregnung einer Gewitterwolke bereitgestellt, wobei in dem Verfahren offen strukturierte, hydrophil modifizierte, mesoporöse Mikro-SiO2-Partikel in der Nähe einer Gewitterwolke platziert werden. Ferner wird vorgeschlagen, offen strukturierten, hydrophil modifizierte, mesoporöse Mikro-SiO2-Partikel zur Abwehr von Hagel und/oder zur Auslösung der Abregnung einer Gewitterwolke zu verwenden. Ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von hierfür geeigneten offen strukturierten, hydrophil modifizierten, mesoporösen Mikro-SiO2-Partikelm wird vorgestellt.
