A system, method or kit for multi-mode optoelectronic observation. The system has a visible near infrared (VNIR) imaging sensor 101 with a variable focal length lens 100, and a long wave infrared (LWIR) imaging sensor 201 with a fixed or variable focal length lens 200, where each sensor generates analogue video signals. The sensors are in communication with each other such that they are synchronized and image parallax corrected. The video signals are separately colourized 105, 205 and mixed via an analogue video mixer 500 generating a composite image signal, which is displayed to a video display. The system also has an ambient light sensor 600, an infrared illuminator 700 and an electronic control module (ECM) 400. The ECM receives light level values from the ambient light sensor, and if the light level is below or above a predetermined threshold, the system may either alter its operation mode or provide the user with an indication to that effect.
