An apparatus 10 for providing hyperthermia therapy to a living subject, the apparatus comprising a signal generator configured to generate a carrier signal； a signal modulator configured to selectably modulate the carrier signal with a modulating signal； and an emitter configured to deliver the modulated carrier signal to a target location on the living subject. The carrier signal may comprise a radio wave. The carrier signal generation may be pulsed. The signal generator may selectively vary a pulse repetition rate of the pulsed carrier. The signal generator may selectively vary a duty cycle of the pulsed carrier. Modulation of the carrier may comprise modulating a frequency of the carrier. The apparatus may further comprise a thermal monitor, a tamper proofing mechanism or wireless communications device. The modulating signal frequency may be selected according to the resonant frequency of the material at the target location. The emitter may comprise an applicator 30. Preferably the apparatus comprises a monitor to monitor a usage parameter of the emitter and an interruption device to automatically prevent further emitter use when the parameter reaches a predetermined threshold. The usage parameter may comprise a total time of emitter use, or possibly a number of on/off cycles.
