Disclosed are human melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH1) receptor-selective antagonist substituted pyridoindoles of formula I, wherein the substituents are as described within the specification. An example of a compound of formula I is 1-(2,9-dimethyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]indol-7-yl)-4-(5-chloropyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2(1H)-one hydrochloride. Further disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula I and the use of a compound of formula I for treating obesity, anxiety, depression, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or a disease or condition which is susceptible to treatment with an MCH1 receptor modulator.
