A method of inhibiting or preventing degeneration of a central nervous system (CNS) neuron or part thereof, comprising administering to the CNS neuron an agent that inhibits the activity or expression of a double specificity leukin fastener kinase (DLK) .2. The method according to claim 1, wherein degeneration is inhibited or prevented in the axon or body part of the CNS neuron cell. The method according to claim 1, wherein the central nervous system neuron is selected from the group consisting of a cerebral granular neuron, cortical neuron, and hippocampal neuron. The method of claim 1, wherein the CNS neuron is not a dopaminergic neuron. The method according to claim 1, wherein said administration results in at least a 10% reduction in degeneration of a population of neurons compared to a population of neurons not treated with the agent. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the agent is a DLK signal transmission inhibitor. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the agent is a DLK expression inhibitor. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of an antibody, short interfering RNA (siRNA), a polypeptide, a peptide antibody, an antisense polynucleotide, an aptamer, a small molecule, and a polysaccharide. The method of claim 8, wherein the antibody is selected from the group consisting of a polyclonal antibody, a monoclonal antibody, a chimeric antibody, a humanized antibody, an Fv fragment, a Fab fragment, a Fab'fragment, and an F (ab ') fragment.
