The present invention provides nucleotide sequence encoding heat shock transcription factor in wheat. The amino acid sequence of the heat shock transcription factor is also provided herein. The present invention also provides a recombinant expression cassette comprising the polynucleotide encoding heat shock transcription factor, a recombinant vector and host cell comprising the expression cassette. Further, a process of conferring an abiotic stress tolerance in plant using the polynucleotide as disclosed in the present invention is provided herein. Also, a transgenic plant showing improved tolerance to an abiotic stress is provided.
