604137 A humidifier for a respiratory apparatus for delivering a humidified flow of breathable gas to a patient. The humidifier is controlled to vary the duty ratio of a heater and has two distinct threshold temperatures: start-up, first threshold, normal operation, second threshold, cut-off. The humidifier has the following technical features: a heating element； a tub to store a supply of water to humidify, a sensor to detect the temperature of the first heating element and a controller configured to receive signals from the sensor. The tub has a heat conducting base which thermally engages with the heating element to heat the supply of water in use. The controller adjustably controls a duty ratio of the heating element according to the following conditions: if the temperature of the heating element is below a first threshold a first duty ratio is applied to the first heating element； or if the temperature of the first heating element is above the first threshold and below a second threshold a second duty ratio is applied to the first heating element； or if the temperature of the first heating element is above the second threshold the first heating element is turned off.
