An apparatus (1) for application on an eye (5), comprising an eye bearing element (2) with a lower surface (3) for bearing on the eye (5), the eye bearing element (2) comprising an insertion area (13) for passing an ophthalmic instrument (7), in particular an injection needle (7) or a surgical instrument (7"), therethrough, wherein the eye bearing element (2), at least in the insertion area (13), is made from a resilient material arranged such that an insertion aperture (14) formed in the insertion area (13) upon insertion of the ophthalmic instrument (7) is at least substantially closed when the ophthalmic instrument (7) is retracted from the eye bearing element (2).
