Embodiments of a surgical access system useful for single or limited portprocedures comprise a trocar (1800)comprising a fixation cannula (1810), a retractor, and a gel cap removablycoupled to the retractor. The gel cap comprises a gelpad that acts as an artificial body wall, through which instruments may beinserted into a body cavity, either directly or throughone or more trocars. The fixation cannula comprises a retainer (1830) and abolster (1840), which together, capture the artificialbody wall therebetween, thereby fixing the trocar thereto. The gel pad permitsflexible instrument placement, as well astranslational and angular degrees of freedom for the instruments whilemaintaining a gas tight seal.
