The catheter positioning system includes a catheter and needle assembly that includes a catheter having a permanent hub and a needle carried in the catheter lumen. The removable clamp is used to press the catheter against the needle to prevent relative axial movement relative to each other. The clamp is periodically released after being moved a short distance towards the target vessel or nerve and is moved a short distance from the skin entry point to further advance the catheter and needle assembly. The clamp is configured to be removed by moving in a direction other than along the catheter longitudinal axis while the hub of the catheter is maintained in place.
