A combine harvester may include a chaffer (30) to separate residue from grain in crop material, a fan (34) to direct air through and across the chaffer (30) to carry the residue from the harvester, a sensor (38) to output signals indicating a characteristic of the crop material upstream of the chaffer (30) and a controller (50) to adjust a speed of the fan (34) based on signals from the sensor (38).
