Use of a methylol transfer agent in the manufacture of a medicament for use in inducing apoptotic death of a neoplastic cell in a mammal by contacting said cell with an apoptosis-inducing amount of said medicament, wherein said medicament is to be administered during at least two dosing cycles, each dosing cycle including (i) an administration phase of 1 to 8 days during which said medicament is administered each day at a total daily dosage of 2 to 60 g of said methylol transfer agent, and (ii) a non-administration phase of 1 to 14 days, during which no methylol transfer agent is administered.
