A method of treating or protecting mammary glands in a mammal, comprising applying a topical composition to the nipples, wherein the topical composition contains (a) citrate； (b) methylene blue； and (c) alkyl parahydroxybenzoate. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the topical composition comprises: (a) about 0.1-2 M citrate； (b) about 0.1-3 mM methylene blue； and (c) about 10-50 mM alkyl parahydroxybenzoate. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition for topical application contains about 0.005-0.5 wt.% Methylene blue. The method of claim 1, wherein the topical composition comprises methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, or both. The method of claim 1, wherein the topical composition further comprises alcohol. The method of claim 5, wherein the alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. The method of claim 5, wherein the topical composition contains from about 0.1% to 20% alcohol. The method of claim 1, wherein the topical composition further comprises an emollient. The method of claim 8, wherein the topical composition contains about 5 wt.% Or more emollients. The method of claim 8, wherein the emollient comprises glycerol, propylene glycol, lanolin, or a combination thereof. The method of claim 1, wherein the topical composition further comprises a surfactant, thickener, or film-forming agent.
