Provided is a method for determining the prognosis of cancer in a female patient with a solid tumor. The percentage of solid tumor cells expressing TUBB3 protein and the percentage of solid tumor cells expressing TUBB6 protein in a solid tumor sample from the patient is determined. Detection of TUBB6 protein expression in a percentage of solid tumor cells of the female patient that is less than the median percentage expression for TUBB6 protein and detection of TUBB3 protein expression in a percentage of solid tumor cells of the female patient that is less than the median percentage expression for TUBB3 protein indicates a patient with good prognosis and wherein detection of TUBB6 protein expression in a percentage of solid tumor cells of the female patient that is equal to or greater than the median percentage expression for TUBB6 protein and/or detection of TUBB3 protein expression in a percentage of solid tumor cells of the female patient that is equal to or greater than the median percentage expression for TUBB3 protein indicates a patient with poor prognosis. Also provided is a method of sensitizing a cancer cell from a solid tumor from a male patient other than a prostate cancer cell to treatment with a chemotherapeutic agent comprising administering an effective amount of antiandrogen and a chemotherapeutic agent other than an antiandrogen. The antiandrogen may be administered before, after, or at the same time as the chemotherapeutic agent.
