At the occurence of an event (malfunction, obstacle) an operator's current gazing direction is compared with an expected gazing direction appropriate for the particular event. When these differ, an alarm is generated to attract the attention of the operator and restore alertness. The operator may be prompted to look in a certain direction and take corrective action.
