The method of reducing the concentration of uric acid in the blood or increasing the excretion of uric acid in a mammalian patient, comprising administering to the patient 2- (3- (2,6-dimethylbenzyloxy) -4-methylphenyl) acetic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof according to claim 1 in an amount effective to reduce the concentration of uric acid in the blood, or increase the excretion of uric acid in a patient. 3. A method for treating or preventing a condition selected from the group consisting of gout, hyperuricemia, elevated uric acid levels that do not correspond to levels usually determining the diagnosis of hyperuricemia, renal dysfunction, kidney stones, cardiovascular disease, risk of developing cardiovascular disease, collapse syndrome tumors, cognitive impairment and early primary hypertension, including the method of clause 2.4. The method of claim 2, wherein the patient is a human. The method of claim 2, further comprising administering to the patient one or more other uric acid lowering drugs in a combined amount effective to reduce the uric acid concentration in the blood or increase uric acid excretion in the patient.
