The present invention relates to a method for controlling the release of volatile compounds from an aerosol-forming substrate in an electrically heated aerosol generating system. The delivery profile of the volatile compounds emitted by the electrically heated aerosol generation system is controlled by setting a predetermined maximum operating temperature of the electrically heated aerosol generation system and controlling the temperature during operation.
