The subject matter of this disclosure provides methods and compositions for treating multiple myeloma. The subject of the present disclosure relates to chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) that specifically target B cell mature antigen (BMCA) and immunocompetent cells that contain such CARs. The BMCA-specific CAR of the present disclosure has enhanced immune activation properties including anti-tumor activity.
