A battery-powered meter for determining analyte concentration in a fluid sample using a control sensor, comprising:! a port configured to receive at least a portion of a control sensor; ! a front portion comprising a display configured to display said analyte concentration in said fluid sample; ! a user interaction mechanism configured to control said meter; ! compartment for rechargeable battery; and! a battery charger component during operation associated with said meter, said battery charger component being configured to execute a fast charge algorithm for a rechargeable battery, said algorithm comprising:! (i) control of connection to an external power source; and! (ii) if said external power source is detected, implementing a charging program for quickly charging said battery at a first charge rate until a first predetermined event occurs, followed by charging said battery at a second charge rate until a second charge occurs a predetermined event, said second charge rate being lower than said first charge rate. ! 2.
