The invention provides a colon cleansing solution comprising: (i) 175 to 220 g per litre PEG, (ii) 15 to 20 g per litre of one or more alkali metal sulphates, alkaline earth metal sulphates or a mixture thereof, (iii) 3.0 to 5.0 g per litre sodium chloride, and 1.5 to 2.5 g per litre potassium chloride and optionally flavouring agents and sweeteners. The invention provides colon cleansing solutions which when ingested in small volumes, do not cause electrolyte imbalances in a subject and improve patient compliance. The invention also provides kits comprising the colon cleansing solutions, and methods of improving the palatability of sulphate-containing cleaning solutions.
