The invention provides methods that enhance the production of biomass from algae that grow autotrophically, heterotrophically, or photoheterotrophically, through the use of plant growth regulators (such as growth hormones, indole acidic acid, etc.) and hormone mimics (phenoxyacetic compounds, etc.).
