An absorbent article, preferably a diaper, having a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis, comprises: a chassis including a skin-facing side, a garment-facing side opposite to the skin-facing side, a front waist region, a back waist region, a crotch region extending between said front and back waist regions and opposed front and back transverse edges positioned on the front and back waist regions respectively, said chassis comprising a topsheet, a backsheet and an absorbent cor disposed between said topsheet and said backsheet, said topsheet being arranged on said skin-facing side, said backsheet being arranged on said garment-facing side, and said absorbent core extending through at least a portion of the crotch region, and wherein said absorbent core terminates at a first distance from said back transverse edge; a pair of opposed elasticized side panels joined to the chassis at the back waist region, each side panel extending out from respective chassis longitudinal edges of the chassis at the back waist region, wherein each said side panel comprises first and second longitudinal edges oppositely disposed along an axis parallel to the transverse axis with the first longitudinal edge being longer than a second longitudinal edge, said elasticized side panels being joined to the chassis along said first longitudinal edge; one or more fastening members joined to each of said opposed elasticized side panels releasably joinable to a garment facing side of the front waist region, wherein opposing fastening members are positioned on a fastener axis extending parallel to the transverse axis; and an elastic waistband member positioned on said back waist region between said pair of opposed elasticized side panels and extending along an axis parallel to the transverse axis, wherein said elastic waistband member is positioned at a second distance from said back transverse edge and a third distance from the absorbent core, said elastic waistband member terminating short of ea
