A hydroponic plant and root support comprises receiving means (figure 8 ref 13), such as a recess, for a growing medium, at least one shelf (figure 2 ref 5) for plant roots protruding from the growing medium to extend over, supporting means (figures 1 and 2 refs 1 and 3) for supporting the receiving means (figures 1 and 2, refs 13 and 29) and the at least one shelf in spaced relationship with the receiving means at a level above the shelf and with the shelf extending substantially laterally. The supporting means maybe in the form of two interlocking sheets, the sheets maybe provided in the region of the top with a recess for receiving the growing medium. The interlocking sheets maybe provided with a lateral slit for receiving the at least one shelf. The supporting means may be mounted or integrally firmed with a container for the plant.
