The present invention relates to a novel compound, named 2-ethoxy-4-(3-hydroxy-2-oxopropyl) phenyl 2-oxoacetate or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, which shows anti-inflammatory activity, and a method for preparing the same. Also, a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating inflammatory diseases, having the compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient is disclosed. Having therapeutic activity for inflammatory diseases, the phenylester compound is also applicable to a quasi-drug composition, a health functional food composition, and a cosmetic composition, all of which are intended to prevent or improve inflammation. Also, a method is provided for treating an inflammatory disease by administering the pharmaceutical composition to a subject in need thereof.
