1. A system for determining the location of a landmark on an orthopedic implant, comprising: a body configured to be autoclaved; a field generator located in the body for generating an electromagnetic field; a first electromagnetic sensor for placement at a predetermined distance from the landmark, generating sensor readings in response to the generated electromagnetic field; an element connected to the housing with the possibility of detachment, and the element defines a longitudinal axis representing one axis of the generated magnetic field, and the system is configured to use one axis of the generated magnetic field to determine the position of the element relative to the landmark. 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one of the following elements: a first probe having a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein a first electromagnetic sensor is disposed in a distal portion of the probe; a probe configured to be retracted comprising a first electromagnetic sensor; or a retractable probe comprising a first electromagnetic sensor and a housing comprising at least a portion of a retractable probe. 3. The system of claim 2, further comprising a second electromagnetic sensor located in a proximal portion of the first probe. The system according to claim 2, further comprising a second probe having a proximal and distal portion, and a third electromagnetic sensor located at the distal end of the second probe, the second probe being longer than the first probe.
