A vertical tier growing system for growing plants. The system includes at least one vertically tiered shelf section 1 secured to and movable along a floor track or rail 18. Each section has its own means to direct nutrient fluid and light to plants growing on said section. At least two of the shelf sections may be moved from a first position adjacent to each other to a second position in which a walkway is provided between them. The floor track may be provided in a grid like formation.
