A sulfonated block copolymer that is solid and not dispersible in water and that has the general configuration AD-BDA, ABDBA, (ADB) nX, (ABD) nX, or mixtures thereof, where n is an integer from 2 to approximately 30 and X is a coupling agent residue, and in which: a) each block A and each block D is a sulfonation resistant polymer block and each block B is a sulfonation susceptible polymer block, not said blocks A, B and D containing significant levels of olefinic unsaturation; b) each block A independently has an average molecular weight between approximately 1,000 and approximately 60,000 and each block B independently has an average molecular weight between approximately 10,000 and approximately 300,000; c) each block A contains one or more segments selected from the following polymerized segments (i) styrene monomers substituted in para, (ii) ethylene, (iii) alpha olefins of 3 to 18 carbon atoms; (iv) 1,3-cyclodiene monomers, (v) conjugated dienes monomers with a vinyl content of less than 35 mole percent before hydrogenation, (vi) acrylic esters, (vii) methacrylic esters, and (viii ) mixtures of the above, d), each segment subsequently hydrogenated containing polymerized 1,3-cyclodiene or conjugated dienes; d) each block B contains segments of one or more vinyl aromatic monomers selected from the following polymerized segments (i) unsubstituted styrene monomers, (ii) ortho substituted styrene monomers, (iii) meta substituted styrene monomers, ( iv) alpha-methylstyrene, (v) 1,1-diphenylethylene, (vi) 1,2-diphenylethylene and (vii) mixtures of the foregoing; e) each block D includes polymers having a glass transition temperature of less than 20 ° C and an average molecular weight between about 1,000 and about 50,000, said block D having been selected from the group consisting of (i) a polymerized or copolymerized conjugated diene selected from isoprene, 1,3-butadiene with a vinyl content before hydrogenation of between 20 and 80 mole percent, (ii) a polymerized a
