To provide a hand-held medical imaging device and related technology for performing in situ observation of residual cancer cells in a tumor resection bed.SOLUTION: A handheld medical imaging device 2 includes a rigid imaging tip 4 optically associated with a photosensitive detector 20. An end of the rigid imaging tip is placed in contact with tissue 24. The rigid imaging tip is used to identify abnormal tissue during a surgery. A contrast agent may be used in an amount sufficient to generate a fluorescence signal.
