A pharmaceutical composition comprising Momordica saponin I is provided to inhibit injury of gastric mucous membrane and secretion of gastric juice caused by alcohol and NSAID(Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as diclofenac, so that the composition is useful for preventing and treating gastritis or gastric ulcer. An anti-gastritis and anti-ulcer pharmaceutical composition comprises Momordica saponin I represented by the formula(1), isolated from Momordicae Semen, which is obtained by extracting Momordicae Semen with distilled water or C1-C6 alcohol such as methanol, ethanol and butanol and subjecting the extract of Momordicae Semen to column chromatography, and is formulated as tablet or capsule, wherein the daily dosage of Momordica saponin I is 0.05-1 mg/kg.본 발명은 위염 또는 위궤양 예방 및 치료에 유용한 모모르디카 사포닌Ⅰ에 관한 것으로서, 더욱 상세하게는 목별자 추출물로부터 분리된 모모르디카 사포닌Ⅰ이 알코올로 인해 유발되는 위점막 손상 억제 활성, 디클로페낙(Diclofenac) 등의 비스테로이드성 소염제(NSAID)로 인해 유발되는 위점막 손상 억제 활성 및 위산 분비 억제 활성 등의 위염 또는 위궤양 예방 및 치료에 유용한 모모르디카 사포닌Ⅰ을 함유하는 약제에 관한 것이다.
