The present invention relates to the free cell wall fraction of Propionibacterium acnes and Propionibacterium granulosum obtained by defatting of ATCC 51277 strain or DSM20458 strain and controlled grinding. Said free fraction is particularly useful as an immunomodulator for a range of disease states and is further characterized by having a high inhibitory effect on the symptoms associated with the disease.
