A screen saver for an X-ray system is controlled depending on an operational state of an apparatus within the system (e.g. X-ray detection apparatus 101, 102). An X-ray imaging apparatus 108 comprises a driving state determination unit 106 to determine the operational state of a connected apparatus 101, 102, and an input sate determination unit 104 to determine state of a user input device 103. A display instruction unit 105 controls a transition to a hide display state in accordance with the obtained operational state. The hide display state comprises performing display while hiding at least part of information displayed on a display device 107. The screen saver is only implemented if the apparatus is not in an imaging state (fig. 5) and if there has been no input operation performed for a predetermined time. This prevents the screen saver being activated while imaging is in progress. The screen saver provides protection of personal information, power saving and prevents display burn-in.
