The present invention relates to a biodegradable fiber based on a hydrophobic derivative of hyaluronan, in particular a hyaluronan derivative C11-C18-acylated on the hydroxyl group of hyaluronic acid, and its use. The present invention further provides for the preparation of these fibers using a wet spinning method in a coagulation bath containing an aqueous solution of an organic acid, and subsequent processing of the yarn, and further into a woven, knitted or nonwoven fabric. It relates to the production of filaments. These fabrics, knitted fabrics, or nonwovens can be used in examples for producing implantable surgical materials for human and veterinary medicine.
