The present disclosure provides proteins, such as antibodies, that contain an antigen binding moiety that specifically binds to programmed death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1). Nucleic acids encoding the proteins and cells containing such nucleic acids (eg, genetically modified cytotoxic lymphocytes) are also provided. In some embodiments, the subject method includes reducing the interaction between PD-L1 on the first cell and PD-1 on the second cell. In some cases, the contacting is in vivo.
