The present invention provides a process for preparing a sulfoalkyl ether -? - cyclodextrin. The method comprises first contacting the cyclodextrin with a base to form an activated cyclodextrin. The method then involves separately contacting the activated cyclodextrin with an alkyl sulphone to form a sulphoalkyl ether -? - cyclodextrin.
