An improved embolic filter frame (31) has looped support struts (34). Theframe provides enhanced longitudinal compliance, improved sealing against avessel wall and a short deployed length. The struts (34) have a high degree ofradial stiffness with a low degree of longitudinal stiffness. The loop supportstruts elongate when tensioned and assume a compressed and essentially linearform. While constrained in this linear state by a delivery catheter (92), thesupport struts exert minimal stress onto the delivery system. The overalldelivery profile and stiffness are therefore reduced. When the deliverycatheter constraint is removed during deployment, the struts "snap open" andassume a looped configuration which exert a high degree of force onto thevessel wall, creating an enhanced filter to vessel wall seal. In addition, thelooped struts (34) and the central collar (46) connecting the support strutsto the support wire (36) are positioned essentially within the plane of thefilter opening. The overall deployed length of the embolic filter (40) isreduced.
