A method for producing microbeads comprising an active component encapsulatedwithin a gelled polymer matrixcomprises the steps of providing a suspension of denatured whey protein and anactive component, treating the suspension togen-erate microbeads, and immediately curing the microbeads by acidification.The microbeads are discrete droplets of gelled wheyprotein having an average diameter in the micron range (for example, from 80to 500 microns) and which, suitably have ageneral-ly spherical shape. The microbeads are capable of surviving passagethrough the stomach, and delivering the encapsulated activeagent in the instestine. Ex-vivo and in-vivo data shows that active agentencapsulated within microbeads retains its functionalityupon delivery to the intestine, and that coating of the microcapsules allowstargeted delivery of the active agent to the distal partof the intestine.
