The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and functional food containing an extract of fermented rice bran for preventing or treating stroke as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, the extract of fermented rice bran limits an area of cerebral infarction, caused by stroke, increases expression of antioxidant genes and neuromodulators, inhibits apoptosis of brain cortical and corpus striatum, and thus has effects of preventing and treating stroke. Therefore, the extract of fermented rice bran can be advantageously used as a brain protection agent for treating brain damage.본 발명은 미강 발효 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 뇌졸중 예방 또는 치료용 약제학적 조성물 및 기능성식품에 관한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 미강 발효 추출물은 뇌졸중으로 인해 나타나는 뇌경색의 크기가 유의적으로 억제되며, 항산화 유전자 또는 신경조절물질의 발현정도를 증가시키고, 뇌의 대뇌피질 또는 선조체 부위의 세포사멸을 억제하여 뇌졸중에 대한 예방 및 치료효과를 나타내므로 뇌손상을 치료하는 뇌보호제로서 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
