PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma in a subject, and to provide a method for treating hepatocellular carcinoma in a subject.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a subject comprising: 1) detecting the level of a Plasmalemma Vesicle-Associated Protein (PLVAP) gene product in a sample from the subject； and 2) determining that the level of the PLVAP gene product in the sample is increased relative to a control. In the step 2), an increased level of the PLVAP gene product in the sample relative to the control is indicative of the presence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the subject, and thereby hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the subject is diagnosed.
