An oral polymer binder containing a synthetic polymer or copolymer, said synthetic polymer or copolymer contains one or more of: (a) a copolymer of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 4-styrene sulfonic acid or a salt thereof； (b) a copolymer of HEMA and sulfopropyl methacrylate or a salt thereof ； (c) a polymer of 4-styrenesulfonic acid or a salt thereof； or (g) a sulfopropyl methacrylate polymer or salt thereof. 2. An oral polymer binder according to claim 1, wherein said synthetic polymer or copolymer is a high molecular weight synthetic polymer. The oral polymer binder of claim 1, wherein said synthetic polymer or copolymer comprises a copolymer of HEMA and 4-styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt (SStNa). The oral polymer binder according to claim 1, wherein said synthetic polymer or copolymer comprises a copolymer of HEMA and 4-styrenesulfonic acid sodium salt hydrate (SStNa). The oral polymer binder according to claim 4, wherein said HEMA-SStNa copolymer has a molar percentage of HEMA / SStNa in the range of about 93.5 / 6.5 to 1 / 99.6. The oral polymer binder according to claim 4, wherein said HEMA-SStNa copolymer is a linear HEMA / SStNa (51.5 / 48.5 mol%). The oral polymer binder according to claim 4, wherein said copolymer of HEMA and SStNa is linear HEMA / SStNa (43/57 mol%). The oral polymer binder of claim 1, wherein said synthetic polymer or copolymer comprises a copolymer of HEMA and a potassium salt of sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPMAK).
