The breathing assistance apparatus includes a gas supply source, an intake pipe, and a humidifier. The gas supply source supplies gas. One end of the intake pipe is connected to a gas supply source and the other end of the intake pipe is connected to a mask covering the patients mouth and nose. The humidifier humidifies the gas in the intake pipe. Specifically, the humidifier includes a container, a humidifying member, and a guide member that guides the humidifying member container from the humidifying member container into the intake pipe. The humidifying member is disposed in the intake pipe in a state where its end portion is inserted into the container. The humidifying member absorbs the liquid in the container from the end portion and allows the liquid to penetrate into the humidifying member by capillary phenomenon. The liquid penetrating into the humidifying member is naturally vaporized in the intake pipe.
