PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a non-transgenic plant that is resistant or tolerant to a herbicide of the phosphonomethylglycine family such as glyphosate, and a method for making a desired mutation in the gene encoding 5-enol pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthetase (EPSPS) in a plant chromosomal or episomal sequence.SOLUTION: Provided is a non-transgenic herbicide-resistant plant that expresses a mutant EPSPS gene product and exhibits substantially normal growth in comparison with a plant expressing a wild type EPSPS gene product.
