A dental cleaning appliance such as a powered toothbrush includes a fluid reservoir for storing working fluid, a nozzle for delivering working fluid to the teeth of a user, a control circuit 174 for activating a light source 170 such as LEDs for illuminating a translucent housing part 116 of the fluid reservoir 116 via an adjacent light emitter 178 and light pipe 176 to generate an alert which is conveyed to the user through the illumination of the fluid reservoir rather than via the handle 16 which may be covered in use. The light source emits light having selected different wavelengths to generate a plurality of different user alerts.
