The present invention relates to a vitrectomy cutter, comprising: a needle body having one or more ports; one or more blades, wherein the blades are located within the needle body and capable of passing over the one or more ports; and characterized by one or more microelectromechanical system devices, wherein the microelectromechanical devices are coupled with the blades; wherein the microelectromechanical system devices are capable of oscillating the blades, wherein the needle body is free of piezoelectric crystals or magnetostrictive drivers for actuating a movement of the blade.
