A method for measuring the height of a person is provided. A person is positioned in a room having a floor and a ceiling, and the method comprises the steps of: i) providing a measuring device ii) calibrating the measuring device to determine a first distance from the floor to the ceiling iii) placing the measuring device on the persons head iv) measuring a second distance from the persons head to the ceiling and v) subtracting the second distance from the first distance to calculate the persons height. An apparatus for performing the measurement is also included.
