A catheter insertion device is disclosed that allows single-handed insertion of a catheter within the vasculature of a patient. The catheter insertion device includes a handle, a needle cannula partially within the handle, a guide wire partially within the handle and needle cannula, and a first actuator connected to the handle and guide wire. The guidewire is moveable relative to the handle distally away from the handle and proximally toward the handle. The catheter assembly is removably coupled to the handle and is configured to slide on the needle cannula. The catheter hub can be connected to the proximal end of the catheter and the catheter advancer pedestal can be releasably connected to the catheter hub. The catheter insertion device can also include a needle support pivotally connected to the handle to support the needle cannula on its cantilever.
