PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of administering famciclovir to recurrent herpes labialis.SOLUTION: The method for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis in mammals, including humans includes administering to the mammal in need of such treatment, an effective amount of 9-(4-acetoxy-3-acetoxymethylbut-1-yl)-2-aminopurine (famciclovir) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof for a period of one day.
