A tree felling head is suspended allowing it to grasp a tree to be felled. The tree felling head has a housing for controls, at least one arm mounted on the housing to grip a tree trunk against the housing, a chainsaw blade extending from the housing and being adapted such that it can perform at least one felling back cut on a gripped trunk and wherein the chainsaw blade is adapted such that it is capable of moving up or down in relation to the housing to allow it to cut the trunk at different heights and wherein a wedge or wedges enter behind the saw blade on the felling cut to assist with causing the tree trunk to fall. The tree felling head fells trees in a manner derived from that adopted by a chainsaw or handsaw operator with the result that the felling head is much lighter than expensive heavy felling machines and allows the use of a lighter and more manoeuvrable transport machines with less environmental impact and additionally the use of the felling head is much safer than manual workers felling trees with chainsaws.
