Provided is a neuroprotective agent screening method comprising an administration step for administering glucose and a test substance to a hypoglycemic encephalopathy model, which is a non-human animal having a flat electroencephalogram and at least one symptom selected from the group consisting of loss of light reflex, dilated pupils, and convulsions, and a screening step for screening as a neuroprotective agent a test substance capable of inhibiting induction of at least one selected from the group consisting of generation of cytotoxic aldhehyde in brain cells and neuron degeneration.
